Choosing a wedding dress is a big decision. Everyone you know who has gotten married has 101 ideas about what you should expect at your first bridal appointment. It can be overwhelming but it doesn't have to be. Not all bridal stores are the same but here are the most important things any bride must know when shopping for a wedding gown.
Arrive on Time
Arriving to your appointment time is extremely important. If your appointment is at 10:00 a.m. make sure that you give yourself enough time to account for traffic and any misguided GPS directions. You want to make the most of your appointment and that means not having to rush through it. If you need assistance with directions, call the shop before your appointment. They can usually give you landmarks or back roads that will make finding them easier.

If you have any ideas of what you are looking for, share them with your consultant. It will help her to pull styles you are interested in. Don't be shy about telling her what you like and don't like. This will help your consultant see your vision and help you find your dream dress.
Limit the Amount of your Entourage
Shopping for wedding dresses is a lot of fun. You may find that many people will volunteer to come to your appointments and help you find your gown. You may think, "the more the merrier", but sometimes that just isn't so. Stick to the key people in your life. These will be the family and friends who want the best for you and will want you to be happy. It's o.k. to bring honest people to your appointment. It is not o.k. to bring people who will make you feel bad about your taste or decision. You also don't want to waste your appointment by trying on multiple dresses that aren't what you like to make anyone happy. If there are any people you are bringing out of obligation, maybe set up a separate appointment for them once you have purchased your dress. It will make them feel included and allow you to have the private time with the people whose opinions really matter.
Try not to Bring Little Kids
Bridal stores are boring places for little kids. The appointment can quickly go from all about you to all about them. There are also pins on the floor and little things children can choke on if not being watched. If you have to bring children with you, make sure there is someone there to keep an eye on them so you can concentrate on finding your gown.
Please Wear or Bring Good Undergarments
Sometimes a lacy pantie can get caught in the zipper or snag on the velcro strap that holds you in. Choose your undies wisely. If you like to avoid pantie-lines by going commando, that's o.k, but make sure you have brought a pair of undergarments to try on dresses with. It will save everyone the time of waiting for you to run to the nearest store to find a pair last minute.
You can however, show up without a bra. Our Stella York dresses are so well made, you may find wearing one unnecessary.
Be open-minded
We see quite a few brides who are looking for one style and end up falling in love with another. A consultant may recommend a style you haven't thought of. Give it a try! It could be the one. That being said, make sure the consultant is listening to you. A good consultant chooses dresses based on information she has collected from you. If you told her you don't want lace, she should not be pulling lace gowns.
