Reasons not to Rent your Wedding Dress

We get a few calls here and there from brides inquiring on wedding gown rentals. A very limited amount of places in South Florida rent wedding dresses. Why so few? There are more Cons than Pros. While Renting your wedding gown seems like a good idea on the surface, there are many more reasons not to!

Cost

A budget conscious bride might look into rentals thinking it could save her some money. In reality, renting a wedding gown can actually end up costing as much as the purchase of a regularly priced gown. Rental pricing depends on the designer. If you are looking at a high-end designer you could end up spending about $1,000 or more. While a lot of rental places are insured for damaged wedding dresses, they will often ask for a deposit. Many places that rent wedding gowns will charge a fee in case something happens to the dress. If someone spills red wine all over your gown, there goes your deposit. If someone steps on your train and puts a big hole in your gown, there goes your deposit. If someone burns a hole in it with a cigarette, which we have seen happen more than once, there goes your deposit. You can see where we are going with this. If you are wearing a wedding gown you purchased, you won’t have to tip-toe around your ceremony and your reception trying to protect your gown from being damaged out of fear of losing your deposit. Who wants to spend their entire wedding doing that? There are other ways to save money.

Alterations

Simple alterations may be done depending on your agreement with the store you rent your gown from. Online sites we visited did not allow alterations to be done at all. Not all brides are the same height or will wear the same shoe height. The standard length of wedding gowns are meant to fit brides who are between 5’7″ and 5’9″. If you are petite, this would not work for you. On a bride who is 5 feet tall, wearing a 3″ to 5″ heeled shoe could still render her gown too long. Also, depending on the style of dress, it may not even be proportionate to the bride’s size. The beauty of having a gown that is all your own is having it tailored to your body. Your curves should fill it in just right.

Availability

With renting a wedding gown, you have a limited amount of time with it. You can borrow it anywhere from 4 days to 2 weeks. That sounds like just enough time, but what if the gown doesn’t work at the last minute. Maybe it is not quite what you imagined or the wrong size. The turn-around time in getting another gown to you by your wedding day is not something you want to play with. You will also need to plan to have someone take care of returning your gown while you are on your honeymoon, if needed.

Experience/Sentimental Value

Wedding gown shopping is a rite of passage. A bride goes with her entourage to look at wedding dresses and try them on and share an intimate moment. There is nothing intimate about ordering a wedding dress online. Wearing a rented wedding gown could possibly mean that several brides have worn it before you. Beading can be pesky and fall off. If they have fallen off a gown at another bride’s wedding, they may be missing from yours. There is no guarantee of every single bead being sewn back on by the time you wear it.

A bride’s wedding is one of the best days of her life. Deciding to purchase the rented wedding gown she wore is usually not an option. This means she will not have the wedding dress as a keepsake and will not be able to save it for her daughter to wear.
